RIEDER MICHAEL

Michael Rieder has resided in Jerusalem for 10 years coming from Melbourne, Australia where he operated a design metal fabrication business. Life in the Holy City stimulated his return to making sculpture using the skills and materials acquired in the course of his professional life.
Fabricating stainless steel, carving wood and assembling them together with whatever can be found useful, Michael creates his figurative sculptures, a mix of the noble and the everyday. The wooden head surmounts a stainless steel body with swarf filled mesh limbs. Is it male or female? Difficult to decide... The poses and seemingly contradictory elements merge into figures of both a sexual and asexual nature, both male and female, weak and stong, either as an indivdual or as members of the group.
Emphasizing an ephemeral posture, he asks about the striving for the spiritual essence and a better understanding of life and the human condition.
Artist has participated in many exhibitions in Melbourne, London and Jerusalem.
